Akiea Gross

Founder + Educator-in-Chief

Akiea is a 2014 graduate of Columbia University's Teachers College and a 2010 graduate of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She holds two Masters degrees, one in Developmental Psychology and another in Childhood Education/Special Education 1-6, a Bachelors degree in Child Development and Family Studies, and a Bachelors degree in Psychology. She is an educator, writer and social entrepreneur who believes that every child is entitled to a racially and culturally equitable education.

Akiea founded Equitable Schools, Inc. based on her experiences teaching in charter schools. Akiea is also the creator of #BlackTeachersMatter and the curative education brand, Woke Kindergarten. In her "spare" time, akiea is part of the collective W.A.V, started by her partner and musical artist Sonic, where she is part of both the management and creative teams. Her greatest past times are hanging out with her dogs and frequenting indie film cinemas throughout the city.
